Homemade Classic Lasagna: A Timeless Italian Treat

Ingredients:

  • 9 lasagna noodles (regular or no-boil)
  • 1 pound ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 2 cups marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Noodles:
    • If using regular lasagna noodles, cook them according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Meat Sauce:
    • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain excess fat. Add marinara sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
  3. Mix the Ricotta Filling:
    • In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, half of the Parmesan cheese, a pinch of salt, and pepper. Mix well until smooth.
  4. Layer the Lasagna:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9×13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Layer 3 lasagna noodles on top, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, a third of the mozzarella cheese, and a third of the meat sauce. Repeat the layers, ending with noodles, remaining meat sauce, and the rest of the mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese.
  5. Bake:
    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, you can spray the foil with cooking spray). Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  6. Let it Rest:
    • Allow the lasagna to cool for about 10-15 minutes before slicing. This helps it set and makes serving easier.
  7. Serve:
    • Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Enjoy your homemade lasagna!

Tips for the Perfect Lasagna:

  • Make Ahead: Lasagna can be prepared a day in advance and stored in the fridge before baking.
  • Customize: Feel free to add vegetables like spinach, zucchini, or mushrooms for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Rest Time: Allowing the lasagna to rest helps the layers hold together when serving.

Buon Appetito!
