Classic Marinara Sauce: A Simple Italian Staple

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes (or whole tomatoes, crushed by hand)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil (or a few fresh basil leaves, torn)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Fresh basil leaves (for garnish, optional)

Instructions:

  1. Sauté the Onion:
  • In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent (about 5 minutes).
  1. Add Garlic:
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute, until fragrant (be careful not to burn it).
  1. Add Tomatoes:
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, including their juice. If using whole tomatoes, crush them by hand as you add them to the pot.
  1. Season the Sauce:
  • Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil (or fresh basil), salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring the sauce to a simmer.
  1. Simmer:
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The flavors will deepen and the sauce will thicken.
  1. Adjust Seasoning:
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or herbs as needed.
  1. Serve:
  • Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. Serve over pasta, as a pizza sauce, or as a dipping sauce. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.

Tips for the Perfect Marinara Sauce:

  • Use Quality Tomatoes: Opt for San Marzano tomatoes for a richer flavor.
  • Fresh Herbs: If using fresh herbs, add them towards the end of cooking for a brighter flavor.
  • Storage: Marinara sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to a week or frozen for up to three months.
