Classic Marinara Sauce: A Simple Italian Staple
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes (or whole tomatoes, crushed by hand)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil (or a few fresh basil leaves, torn)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- Fresh basil leaves (for garnish, optional)
Instructions:
- Sauté the Onion:
- In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent (about 5 minutes).
- Add Garlic:
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute, until fragrant (be careful not to burn it).
- Add Tomatoes:
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes, including their juice. If using whole tomatoes, crush them by hand as you add them to the pot.
- Season the Sauce:
- Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil (or fresh basil), salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring the sauce to a simmer.
- Simmer:
- Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The flavors will deepen and the sauce will thicken.
- Adjust Seasoning:
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or herbs as needed.
- Serve:
- Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. Serve over pasta, as a pizza sauce, or as a dipping sauce. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
Tips for the Perfect Marinara Sauce:
- Use Quality Tomatoes: Opt for San Marzano tomatoes for a richer flavor.
- Fresh Herbs: If using fresh herbs, add them towards the end of cooking for a brighter flavor.
- Storage: Marinara sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to a week or frozen for up to three months.
